Filly Funtasia Episode 11: "The Lost Mermaid" - Discussion

For this episode, I think it's the best to link a very old tweet from BRB Internacional.

Very much the Seaquestria theme of MLP the Movie. But who copied who here ? I mean Filly was made years before MLP. There have been mermaid-ponies before in My Little Pony actually in G1 way back in the 80s. Even if I have no Idea of what they talk about in Italian I liked the episode.
Sea ponies in G1 were seahorse-like. It's only later, in generation three were mermaidish ponies.
But what matters is how good this episode was, and it was great. And so many expressions... Proud of Bella, who thought she can do that.
And Glitterina in this dub got Lynn's va if I'm not mistaken.
@Zejgar - Episode 12? Don't you mean "Episode 11"?

Okay, got around to watching it with subs and... some redemption in the visual department, I will admit. I know I've ragged on the speculars being painted on now instead of rendered normally like they are in the opening and the first few episodes, but they at least use this for an effect in this episode, namely to get the watery eye effect. That's good. I can tolerate a downgrade if it's functional. Crystal mirrors are confirmed to have crystals in them, and the crowns do as well. Still not sold on Wranglum bothering with such small fry earlier on, but at least it's addressed.

I'd have liked to see a little more background on Wranglum, since we've yet to see an on-screen exposition delivery for his past, but at least he gets his name dropped this time by Fillies. Wranglum himself continues to have his upgraded look, too, the lighting and compositing in this episode is back to its old, good state. The simulations are not, but that's par for the course.

Story-wise, there's a lot to like. Will gets to show off why he's the mascot of the franchise, Rose makes for a good stubborn hero, and Bella gets some character growth (finally). And plot twist, turns out she's not so much a Pinkie Pie or a Rarity like one would think, but very much a Derpy: a kinda goofy character who tries to do good and suffers from insecurity. Again, it's a relatable character, kind of something we've seen in other shows but not quite the same. The stakes in the story are pretty high, compared to what we've had in other episodes. The crystal is presented well as a protective force... presented in the sense that it starts freaking *shooting* things. Batti's antics were a nice touch. And holy carp, those Sharpteeth. I've seen this before. It was a film called 'Beneath' and lemme tell ya, it did not end well for the people on the boat.

Also: Elves can't swim. That feels like it should be a meme. Why is that not a meme yet? Like, I know it's just Bella for now, but that feels like it should be a mainstay in fantasy for some reason.

Anyhoot, we even get some fridge horror to spice things up. The last Mermaid Filly warrior hid the crystal. The crystal was on dry land, where those evil fish would never be able to get to it.

That warrior sacrificed his life by going on dry land to drop the crystal in the middle on an island. I hope we get a name for that warrior in the future, and I expect a statue.

Fanfic writers, get on that, would you?
